Natural Homemade Laundry Soap Powder and other Laundry Recipes

Simple, simple, simple!  :)

Homemade Laundry Soap Powder

16 cups washing soda (NOT baking soda!  Found in laundry aisle of your grocery – probably next to Borax)

12 cups Borax

8 cups grated castile soap

3 Tables.  lavender, lemon, or grapefruit essential oil

Combine washing soda, Borax, and soap flakes.  Add essential oil and mix with a wire whisk.  Use 1/8 cup per load (more or less depending on your needs.  Try 1/8 cup and if you need more, use more the next time).  Recipe makes enough powder to last a family of four several months, possibly a year.    Recipe found in “Clean, Naturally”  by Sandy Maine

Pre-Wash Stain Remover Spray

1/2 cup white vinegar

1/4 cup baking soda

2 tables. ammonia

3 cups water

Stir together and fill a labeled spray bottle.  Spray on heavily soiled spots just before washing (spot test first).  Recipe found in “Clean, Naturally” by Sandy Maine.

Homemade LIQUID Laundry Soap

1 bar soap (I use plain old Ivory or sometimes Dr. Bronner’s castile soap)

1/2 cup Borax

1/2 cup WASHING soda

Water

5 gallon bucket with a cover

Grate the bar of soap with a cheese grater, place the flakes in a medium saucepan.  Add several (5 or 6) cups of water, heat.  Continuously stirring the soap flakes, allow them to melt over the heat.  When melted, add the borax and washing soda, stirring.  When all this has melted, pour into the 5 gal bucket, fill 3/4 full with HOT water.  I add 25 or 30 drops of essential oil at this point – lavender, orange, lemon, etc.  Give it all a good stirring.  Put the cover on the bucket and let it set OVERNIGHT.  In the morning, it will be goopy.  When using, you need to re-stir because it “gellifies” (is that a word??).  I’ve used this for several months, it works on just about anything.  My husband is a lobsterfisherman and let me tell you, if it gets out the smell of old salty bait, and the stains, it’ll work on just about anything!! :)    Recipe from The Prairie Homestead – found here

Sleep Tincture – Easy To Make and it WORKS!

This Tincture is the best thing ever to help you not only FALL asleep but STAY asleep!

It contains chamomile, lemon balm, catnip, oatsraw, and hops.  All of these herbs are calmative and sleep inducing herbs.  They are all safe for children, even young ones.  I made this for my family several years ago when our youngest daughter was about 12 months old.  Worked like a charm!

Down at the bottom of this page is a pink box that says “Go Herbal”.  If you click on the box you will be taken to the Bulk Herb Store – this is THE resource for purchasing your herbs and supplies in bulk.

When you get to the Bulk Herb Store’s site, search for “Snooze Tincture”.

All you need is the dried herbs, food grade vegetable glycerin, a quart sized jar with lid, and a decent crockpot.

You can make it one of two ways. You can make a small batch that will yield you somewhere near a 1/2 quart of tincture, or you can make a large amount that will make about 3 quarts, give or take.

Smaller Batch:

Fill jar about 1/2 way with dried herbs, pour in vegetable glycerin until about 1/2 inch from the top of the jar, put lid on jar, place in crockpot (place a potholder in the bottom of the crockpot for the jar to sit on), fill the crockpot with water until the jar is nearly covered,  turn it on low.  Leave it on low for 2 – 3 days.  Stir once a day.  When its “done”, it will smell quite fragrant and the liquid will be dark.  Strain off the herbs (I use cheesecloth).  Pour the finished product in a clean jar, store in a cool dry place.

Large Batch:

Place several cupsful of the dried herbs (about 1/3 of the crockpot) in the crockpot, pour in the vegetable glycerin up to about an inch or so from the top of the crockpot.  Leave it on low for about 2 – 3 days.  Stir once a day.  When its “done”, it will smell fragrant and the liquid will the quite dark.  Strain off the herbs with the cheesecloth.  Pour the finished product into jars, store in a cool dry place.

That’s it! :)

I give 2 droppersful to my 6 and 9 year old daughters, 3 droppersful for the oldest and myself.

Try it – its so simple and yes it does work!

It’s All About Freedom Of Choice

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately.

What is it that I really want to impress upon my readers?  What is the purpose of this blog?  What’s the point anyway?

It’s all about freedom of choice.

You are free to choose whether or not you will take the time to learn how to care for your family’s health yourself or whether you’ll continue to line the pockets of Big Pharma.

You are free to choose whether or not you will take the time to learn how to make your own home cleaning products, body care products, herbal remedies, etc. or whether you’ll continue to buy into big advertiser’s claims.

You are free to decide whether or not you want to do your own research and learn about the chemicals that are in your food, laundry soap, deoderants, shampoos, etc. or whether you’ll decide that you "can’t be afraid to live" and just keep buying them.

You are free to decide to run to the doctor for every sore throat and fever or to learn about simple herbal remedies that will aid the healing process rather than just masking the symptoms.

My purpose is to show you that you do have this freedom of choice.  My purpose is to empower you to make the choice that I have made – that I WILL NOT be a part of Big Pharma, or Big Ag for that matter, that I WILL use my own home care and body care products that I have made in my own kitchen, and that I WILL continue to learn and empower others to do the same.

You are perfectly capable of learning to care for your family’s health and home using remedies and products that you have made yourself.

You are perfectly capable of researching herbs and whole food nutrition.  Don’t let any "medical professional" tell you otherwise!

And another thing, every single recipe or product recommendation on this blog is for something that either I am using myself in our home or am using for my own health or the health of my children.  If it isn’t in our home, its not on this blog Period.

Go ahead and share any thoughts or comments you might have, whether you disagree with me or not.  Take a moment to hit that "like" button and the "tweet" button too.  I appreciate you and your commitment to a healthy, natural lifestyle!

The Sparrow At Starbucks

Just got this in an email from a friend.   This isn’t my usual "natural living/natural health" type of post but I enjoyed it and thought some of you might too.  Enjoy.

The SPARROW at STARBUCKS

The song that silenced the cappuccino machine

It was chilly in Manhattan but warm inside the Starbucks shop on 51st
Street and Broadway, just a skip up from Times Square. Early November
weather in New York City holds only the slightest hint of the bitter chill
of late December and January, but it’s enough to send the masses crowding
indoors to vie for available space and warmth.

For a musician, it’s the most lucrative Starbucks location in the world,
I’m told, and consequently, the tips can be substantial if you play your
tunes right. Apparently, we were striking all the right chords that night,
because our basket was almost overflowing. It was a fun, low-pressure gig
- I was playing keyboard and singing backup for my friend who also added
rhythm with an arsenal of percussion instruments. We mostly did pop songs
from the ’40s to the ’90s with a few original tunes thrown in. During our
emotional rendition of the classic, "If You Don’t Know Me by Now," I
noticed a lady sitting in one of the lounge chairs across from me. She was
swaying to the beat and singing along.

After the tune was over, she approached me. "I apologize for singing along
on that song. Did it bother you?" she asked. "No," I replied. "We love it
when the audience joins in. Would you like to sing up front on the next
selection?"

To my delight, she accepted my invitation. "You choose," I said. "What
are you in the mood to sing?"

"Well. … do you know any hymns?"

Hymns? This woman didn’t know who she was dealing with. I cut my teeth on
hymns. Before I was even born, I was going to church. I gave our guest
singer a knowing look. "Name one."

"Oh, I don’t know. There are so many good ones. You pick one."

"Okay," I replied. "How about ‘His Eye is on the Sparrow’?"

My new friend was silent, her eyes averted. Then she fixed her eyes on
mine again and said, "Yeah. Let’s do that one." She slowly nodded her
head, put down her purse, straightened her jacket and faced the center of
the shop. With my two-bar setup, she began to sing.

Why should I be discouraged? Why should the shadows come?
I sing because I’m happy; I sing because I’m free. For His eye is on the
sparrow and I know He watches me.

The audience of coffee drinkers was transfixed. Even the gurgling noises
of the cappuccino machine ceased as the employees stopped what they were
doing to listen. The song rose to its conclusion.

I sing because I’m happy; I sing because I’m free. For His eye is on the
sparrow And I know He watches me.

When the last note was sung, the applause crescendoed to a deafening roar
that would have rivaled a sold-out crowd at Carnegie Hall. Embarrassed,
the woman tried to shout over the din, "Oh, y’all go back to your coffee!
I didn’t come in here to do a concert! I just came in here to get
somethin’ to drink, just like you!" But the ovation continued.

I embraced my new friend. "You, my dear, have made my whole year! That was
beautiful!"

"Well, it’s funny that you picked that particular hymn," she said.

"Why is that?"

"Well . .." she hesitated again, "that was my daughter’s favorite song."

"Really!" I exclaimed.

"Yes," she said, and then grabbed my hands. By this time, the applause had
subsided and it was business as usual.. "She was 16. She died of a brain
tumor last week."

I said the first thing that found its way through my stunned silence. "Are
you going to be okay?"

She smiled through tear-filled eyes and squeezed my hands. "I’m gonna be
okay. I’ve just got to keep trusting the Lord and singing his songs, and
everything’s gonna be just fine." She picked up her bag, gave me her card,
and then she was gone.

Was it just a coincidence that we happened to be singing in that
particular coffee shop on that particular November night? Coincidence that
this wonderful lady just happened to walk into that particular shop?
Coincidence that of all the hymns to choose from, I just happened to pick
the very hymn that was the favorite of her daughter, who had died just the
week before? I refuse to believe it.

God has been arranging encounters in human history since the beginning of
time, and it’s no stretch for me to imagine that God could reach into a
coffee shop in midtown Manhattan and turn an ordinary gig into a revival.
It was a great reminder that if we keep trusting God and singing the
songs, everything’s gonna be okay.

The next time you feel like GOD can’t use YOU, just remember…
Noah was a drunk
Abraham was too old
Isaac was a daydreamer
Jacob was a liar
Leah was ugly
Joseph was abused
Moses had a stuttering problem
Gideon was afraid
Sampson had long hair and was a womanizer
Rahab was a prostitute
Jeremiah and Timothy were too young
David had an affair and was a murderer
Elijah was suicidal
Isaiah preached naked
Jonah ran from God
Naomi was a widow
Job went bankrupt
John the Baptist ate bugs
Peter denied Christ
The Disciples fell asleep while praying
Martha worried about everything
The Samaritan woman was divorced, more than once
Zaccheus was too small
Paul was too religious
Timothy had an ulcer…
AND Lazarus was dead!

No more excuses now!! God can use you to your full potential. Besides you
aren’t the message, you are just the messenger.

Simple Recipe For All-Purpose Cleaner/Disinfectant Spray

After finding out about the yucky chemicals in household cleaners and their potential health risks, I started looking for alternatives.  I mean, you can’t just NOT clean your house.

I tried a bunch of so-called "natural" cleaners.

One of two things happened.

Either a. They DIDN’T work worth BEANS and they were EXPENSIVE or, b. the "natural" cleaners still had chemicals in them!  I’m not going to name brand names here but contact me personally and I’ll give you the lowdown…it ain’t pretty!

So, I started searching for a SIMPLE and CHEAP alternative.

Here’s what I came up with:

ALL PURPOSE CLEANER AND DISINFECTANT SPRAY

2 cups cheap white vinegar

1/4 cup (give or take) Liquid Castile Soap (I used Dr. Bronner’s)

25 drops Lavender Essential oil

20 drops Peppermint Essential oil

10 drops Orange or Lemon Essential oil

Combine in an empty spray bottle, fill up the rest of the way with warm tap water – 2 cups (?).  Shake to mix.  You’ll have to shake every time you use it.

Spray on surface lightly and wipe with a soft damp cloth.  You really don’t need to use a lot – its highly concentrated and a little goes a long way!

I used it on my bathroom that hadn’t been cleaned for around 5 days – gobs of kid’s toothpaste in the sink, etc.  Sprayed it on, wiped if off – it actually WORKED and no fumes!

Also works in the toilet, kitchen, tile and vinyl floors (I’d quadruple the recipe for floors and mix in a bucket – whatever works for you).

The essential oils used are ani bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-microbial.  And they smell good! :)

I’m sure you can come up with other oils to use too, such as Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Cloves, etc.  All are anti-bacterial, etc.

So there you have it.  No more worrying about the chems in your cleaning products!!  And no more spending lots of money on "natural" products that aren’t!

Mix it up, use it, and comment below.  Let me know what else you’ve come up with for recipes.  Also feel free to share on FB and Twitter too! :)

Oh No! A Cold!

Just a quick post today.

Yes, it’s ME with a cold. Not a big deal, but a cold nevertheless.

Started yesterday morning with that “I think I’m coming down with something/achy/yucky” feeling.  You know what I mean?  Thought so.

So what did I do?  I drank several cups of ginger tea and soaked in that bathtub (like I told you about in this post).  And I rested.  Period.  Listen to your body.  If it says “I’m tired”, for crying out loud, go to bed!  “Pushing it” isn’t going to help anybody.

So this afternoon, guess what?  Its almost gone!  Yay!  Ginger tea and couple of hot soaks to the rescue again! :)   My girls are especially happy because I can read to them tonight, whereas, last night their father read to them.  Apparently its just not “the same”.  :)

Estrogen Overload Might Be Causing You To Feel Sick And Tired All The Time

Wow.  We’ve been lied to.  Big Time.  And we’re paying for it with our healthBIG TIME.

A couple of posts back, I told you I was doing some research on chemicals and toxins that may or may not be causing chronic illness in humans such as autoimmune disorders.

I’m going to share some of what I’ve found here and in the next few posts.  Its no wonder our “healthcare industry” (a.k.a. SICK CARE industry) is so dang HUGE.

There are well over 70,000 registered chemicals having hormonal effects, in addition to being toxic and carcinogenic.  The effects of exposure to these chemicals, especially repeated exposure, are unknown at this time.  These chemicals can increase the estrogen load in the body and are difficult, if not impossible, to detoxify through the liver.  The reason the chemicals seemingly increase the estrogen load in the body is because they are synthetic estrogens, or estrogen “mimickers”.  They are making their way into our bodies through a variety of means and our bodies “read” them as estrogen (because xenoestrogens’ molecular structure is nearly the same shape as hormonal estrogens – I’m NOT a scientist so I’m doing my best to explain it in plain English!).  They are present in our soil, water, air, food supply, personal body care, and household products.  They are known as Xenoestrogens.

Here’s a link to an article by Linda Beadle, Registered Holistic Practitioner.  It contains quite a comprehensive list of Xenoestrogens.  And, what’s more, I’ll bet you $100 you’ve got some these products in your home RIGHT NOW.

Here are just a few common chemicals you’ve probably got in your kitchen or bathroom right now:

  • Organ chlorines.  Used in pesticides, bleaching of feminine products, and in the manufacture of plastics.
  • Bisphenol-A (BPA).  Used in many plastic bottles.  Its also found in the lining of many cans of food (like soup cans), juice containers, and some “stainless steel” water bottles.
  • Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHS) – a preservative used in many processed “foods”.
  • Parabens and phenoxyethanol are used as preservatives in body care products such as shampoos, conditioners, make up, skin lotions, etc.  These products are 100% absorbed into your body!!
  • Laundry products such as dryer sheets, detergents, and fabric softeners ensure close contact with these chemicals!  (Make your OWN laundry detergent – here’s what I use.)

Oh, there’s more.

  • Diethanolamine. Found in soaps, detergents, and in more than 600 home and personal care products such as shampoo, conditioners, baby bubble baths, make up, etc., etc.  Commonly called DEA or Cocamide DEA.
  • Propylene Glycol.  Found in ANTI-FREEZE, hydraulic fluids, de-icer, floor wax, PET FOOD (!) and shampoo, conditioners, skin lotions, cosmetics, TOOTHPASTE.  Wanna use ANTI-FREEZE the next time you shower? How about brushing your teeth with it? Didn’t think so.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate.  Found in harsh cleaners like car wash detergents.  Also found in toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, baby bubble baths, etc.!
  • TALC.  Talc is chemically similar to ASBESTOS!  Found in many baby products, feminine powders, and cosmetics.
  • Aluminum chlorohydrate.  Found in anti-perspirants.  Acts like, or mimics, estrogen in the body.  You’re applying it directly over lymph glands under your arms and right by your breast tissue!
  • Salicylic Acid.  Commonly used as an anti-aging and anti-acne treatment but is a suspected xenoestrogen!

I think its high time to take a good hard look at all the products you and I use on a daily and weekly basis.  Become a label reader.  Become educated on these chemicals.  And the end of this post I will list the sources so you can do your own research (and so I can give proper documentation!).

Learn how to make body care products yourself.  I make our own shampoo, laundry detergent, facial cleanser, etc.  Use plain old vinegar and water to clean with.  IT WORKS first of all.  Secondly, you aren’t breathing in toxic fumes!

I’m far from done.  There’s so much out there it’ll make your head spin.  Next post I’ll share more on what these chemicals do to your health.  Stay tuned, if you dare!  :)

Nourish and Increase Energy With Nettle Infusion!

I’ve been doing something for the past week to increase my energy and wellbeing even more – its Spring here in Maine and its time to get outside and get growing!  :) I’ve been making a quart of Nettle Infusion and drinking it every other day.  You need to drink it at least 3x a week, 4 is better.

Stinging Nettle (Urtica Dioica) is loaded with nutrition (protein, chlorophyll, Vitamins C and A, and minerals like calcium, magnesium, silicon and fiber.  Its in the herb family but its really a nutritive food.  Its great for hair growth, strong nails, kidney function (it increases urine production, is a diuretic), and its great for the adrenals and results in an increase in energy.

Nettles has also been found to:

  • Reduce PMS symptoms, lessens heavy menstrual bleeding, replenishes lost vitamins and minerals.
  • Build bones.
  • Help with Gout (magnesium has been shown to aid in Gout symptoms).
  • Kill yeast overgrowth and fungus.

So, how do you do this anyway you ask?

So simple, you won’t believe it. Get a quart sized glass canning jar with a lid.  Boil about a quart of water.  (Heat the glass jar in hot water to avoid bursting!)  Place about an ounce weightwise (a couple LARGE handfuls) of dried nettle (available here) in the jar, fill the jar with the boiling water.  Stir the nettle mix around, put on the lid.  Let this is for at least 4 hours, overnight is better.  I’ve been doing mine the night before and letting it set out on the counter overnight.  After its done its thing, strain out the herbs, compost them, and drink the remaining liquid.  I have been drinking mine cold this week but am going to try it warm like tea later this afternoon.

Even after a few days, I’ve noticed my nails look better and my hair (which is thick) is more manageable.  I also have even more clarity of mind and more energy.  Even after a few days! One thing to note – its a little bitter!  I’ve been sprinkling a small amount of stevia in mine, makes it easier to “go down”!  My taste buds usually adjust fairly quickly to new tastes so I’m sure I won’t need the stevia much longer. (Note – A month later – I don’t need the stevia.  And I feel awesome!!  LOVE Nettles!)

Here’s what I want you to do – try it!

Let me know your results by commenting below.  Notice how you feel the first day, the 7th day, the 14th day, etc.  Leave your results below or with a tweet or on my FB page.  I’m interested to know how this works for you! :)

Black Mold and Autoimmune Disorders (a probable link)

It all started with black mold.

We moved into an old 1850′s farmhouse in late 1998.  Within a WEEK, both my husband and I were sick.  What we didn’t know at the time was that we were just beginning a 7 year long exposure to black mold.

Black mold  (Stachybotrys chartarum and Stachybotrys chlorohalonata) is HIGHLY toxic.  Look for mildew on your windows, yellowish stains on your ceilings and walls, mildew in the bathroom, etc.   As the mold grows, it becomes more toxic as it releases into the air.  As it grows, it forms Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOC’s, that are basically released into the air you breathe, creating a host of health problems such as:

  • Breathing difficulties
  • Ear ringing
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Lethargy
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Joint Pain
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Memory Loss
  • Chronic cough
  • Low grade fever

(the symptoms in italics are symptoms of CFS/Fibromyalgia that I experienced).

We discovered the source of the problem in 2005, after a long 7 years of being sick and in bed most of the time.  The house had a granite block foundation with a dirt floor, typical of 1850′s construction.  About 2/3 of the cellar was a “crawlspace”, with the remaining 1/3 being used by the furnace, oil tank, etc.  The problem was in the crawlspace but we couldn’t physically get to it.  We basically abandoned the house, and moved out.

I thought that once we moved out we’d feel better.  Wrong!  It wasn’t until 2007 that I learned about the toxic effects of the mold and that your liver can’t process it.  It basically stays in your liver (as do other harmful chemicals – the subject of another blog post).  So a detox is absolutely necessary.

I began to detox with sea vegetables and aloe vera in early 2007.  Within a few weeks I was on the road to recovery, and had more energy than I’d had in years.

One of the nutrients in sea vegetables is Fucoidan.  Fucoidan has a myriad of health benefits, among them is its ability to draw chemicals, heavy metals, and toxins from the liver.  To aid this process, one must drink plenty of water to help the body flush out the toxins.  Once these toxins are flushed out, your energy increases, your mind is clearer, and many nagging health issues start disappearing.

If you’re like I was, lethargic, aching all over, and want help – enter your contact info in that little blue box off to the right.  You’ll soon receive my 3 Steps To More Energy which includes detoxing plus a whole bunch more tips and recipes to get your health and life back on track. :)

If you suspect you’ve got mold, especially if you can SEE it, begin cleaning ASAP.  Also get “The Sick House Survival Guide” by Angela Hobbs over in the pink box off to the right (links with Amazon).  This book was our starting point.  I felt overwhelmed and relieved at the same time while reading this book:  relieved that I had an ANSWER and overwhelmed by what it meant – we had to get out NOW!

I’m going to do a whole series of blog posts similar to this one regarding chemicals and toxins that might be one of the causes of autoimmune disorders.  Stay tuned! :)

Reduce Symptoms of Autoimmune Disorders By “Deflaming”

Contrary to what your doctor might be telling you, you CAN reduce (or in my case eliminate) the symptoms of autoimmune disorders such as Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia.  These symptoms vary from person to person, but typically include joint pain, mild fever, extreme fatigue, “brain fog”, etc.

The diet we eat plays a huge role in our general health.  However, typical “health foods” such as soy are not what they seem.  Grains and legumes are pretty much the basis of a vegetarian diet – they’re healthy, right?  Not so fast.  Grains and legumes (beans, lentils, SOY) also contain sugar proteins called lectins.  Lectins are difficult to digest and cook.  Before they are absorbed in the digestive tract, they cause inflammation in the digestive system.  After they are absorbed, they bind to the surface of many cells in the body, a process called agglutination – they basically stick to other cells.  Research suggests that many allergies, inflammatory diseases (arthritis) and autoimmune disorders are lectin related.  Get Nourishing Traditions by Nancy Fallon to learn more about so called “health foods”.

The process of “deflaming” boils down to getting rid of “inflaming” foods in your diet, such as:

  • ALL grains and grain products including bread (white, “whole grain”, wheat, etc.), pastas, cereals (including oatmeal), crackers, and anything else made with grains or flours made from grains.  Be especially careful of prepackaged stuff.
  • Partially hydrogenated oils such as those found in margarine and deep fried foods.
  • Soybean oil, corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil and foods made from these such as mayonnaise, margarine, salad dressing, etc.
  • Cow’s milk dairy (goat dairy is alkaline – NOT inflammation causing)
  • Commercial sugar
  • SOY products (I’ll go into the scary stuff about soy in another post – let’s just leave it at this – DON’T eat it!)
  • Meat and eggs from grain fed (versus GRASS fed) animals.

Tomorrow I’ll go into more detail as to what foods to INCLUDE in your diet to hasten this process of “deflaming”.

To learn how I completely ELIMINATED my symptoms of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, enter your contact information in that little blue box on the right.  You’ll soon receive “3 Steps To More Energy” and be on the pathway back to a healthy life. :)
