Ok, you’ve seen the Facebook posts about chemicals in food, water, vaccines, pills, etc. Your family is going in a hundred different directions everyday and you know time is fleeting. You know you want to change the direction your family’s headed in…to SLOW DOWN… but HOW? It’s so overwhelming!!
I was right where you are back in the early 2000’s.
I knew in my gut that I wanted to change how we were living, our diet, our home life. I wanted to learn the Old Ways of preparing food, grinding my own grain, eating really nourishing food, spending most days outside in the sunshine and fresh air… but it all seemed so overwhelming, such a huge change, and I didn’t know where to begin.
** I just began! I started going through our kitchen cupboards and tossing out everything in cans and boxes. No more “Supper Helper” type boxed junk. No more canned soups & mac & cheese. I even got rid of “cookbooks” that used these processed items as ingredients in the recipes, no matter how tasty they looked.
** I got ahold of a couple of life saving books – Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon, and The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery. Both are available on Amazon by clicking the links below (yes they are affiliate links – I earn a little bit off of each purchase, helps to keep the blog running, that’s about it!).
** I then started taking a look at what we were using for cleaning products and started throwing that all away. I learned how to make my own cleaners with vinegar – search through the “Natural Health & Home” tab and you’ll find those recipes.
** I started learning all I could about organic gardening and started growing my own food. I’ve never had a huge garden but I’ve had enough for us to eat fresh during the warmer months and had enough to freeze for a few meals, nothing huge. I’m thinking its time to dig deeper and bigger and grow more.
** I also started leaning all I could about herbs and how to prepare and use them as medicines and preventatives. There are many, many resources out there for this. Here’s where I got started – The Bulk Herb Store – they have bulk dried herbs and supplies plus tutorials to get you started on your herb journey.
** What about essential oils? Essential Oils are a powerful addition to your family’s wellness and quest for a natural life. Just one drop of an oil can change your mood. Oils can be used in cleaning too. At the top of this page is a box you can click to receive my eBook Simple Homekeeping Tips for free. No strings attached! You’ll learn useful tips on keeping your home tidy plus how to use oils in your home. It also includes recipes for natural cleaners.
**Homeschool!!! I’ll just mention this in passing as this could be a whole blog section of its own. If you are able to keep the kids home, there is no better way to nurture little hearts that keeping them where they belong – with you their Mama – for as long as possible. You really are their first teacher and it is a huge responsibility, not one to be taken lightly. You know your kids better than anyone else. Don’t second guess and think that you aren’t qualified, because you are!! Its so freeing to be able to go for a hike in the woods with my girls and talk about the **deep** things of life and really spend time just soaking in His Presence and enjoying each other’s company. There’s way more than could be said but I’ll leave it at that for now. 😉
You’ve just got to START. Start with your kitchen cupboards. Throw out any boxed or canned “meals” and learn how to actually cook from scratch. It’s NOT HARD, though it does take some planning ahead! I’ve got a post on here about planning ahead for meals – click here to read it.
Then start learning all you can about herbs, growing a veggie garden, and essential oils. Slowly add new skills. Start with food. Add in water & herbal tea instead of sodas and energy drinks. Move on to herbs and oils. Then cleaners. Get outside in nature as much as possible! Daily or at least several times per week get outside and BREATHE fresh air and get some sunshine! I’ll bet within a year you won’t recognize your home or lifestyle. 🙂
